CRUSADERS. Venetians in the Levant. 14th to 15th centuries. Ducat (Electrum, 21 mm, 3.45 g, 2 h), uncertain mint, struck in the name of Andrea Dandolo, 1342-1354. ANDR DANDVIO / DVX / S M VENE St. Mark standing right, holding book of Gospels in his left hand and presenting banner inscribed DVX to Doge Andrea Dandolo, kneeling to left and raising his head toward the saint. Rev. •SITT XPЄ DATO•TV RЄCIS•ISTЄ•DVCAT'• Christ, nimbate, standing facing in mandorla with nine stars, raising his right hand in benediction and holding book of Gospels in his left. Cf. Friedberg 1221 and Paolucci 1 (for prototype in gold). Struck from slightly worn dies and with a minor die break on the obverse, otherwise, very fine.
